Uwezo Girls and Women Self Help Group

After realising most of us single mothers are caring for our children without any help Jacqueline Ruthi, a single mother of two kids, decided to create an organization that would allow women to work together in a collaborative way, towards a better life, this is how "Uwezo Girls and Women Self Group" was born.

Uwezo means "we can" and today, following our motto, we are 15 single mothers and widows working together because we truly believe we can. Our group started with a monthly contribution of 200 Kenya shillings (about 2 dollars) from five of us and eventually we started table banking where we could lend each other the money and pay back with 10% interest and after five months we started out a weaving project. We are looking to take our organization further, focusing on working and providing counselling for women suffering from the HIV and AIDs epidemic.
